Headache and the Eyes

Common causes of headache, how some vision or eye problems can contribute, and when an ophthalmic examination is useful.

Headache and the Eyes

Can eye problems cause headache?

Visual strain, uncorrected refractive errors, prolonged near work and dry eye can contribute to headache in some people, although many headaches have causes unrelated to the eyes.

When is an eye examination helpful?

Assessment is useful when headache is associated with blurred or double vision, eye pain, redness, light sensitivity or a noticeable change in visual function.

Urgent symptoms

A sudden severe headache, neurological symptoms, sudden visual loss or severe eye pain requires prompt medical assessment and should not automatically be attributed to eye strain.
