Blocked tear ducts in infants
Some babies are born with incomplete opening of the tear drainage system, causing watering and recurrent discharge.
Does it improve naturally?
Many congenital tear-duct obstructions improve during the first year of life. Gentle massage and eyelid hygiene may be recommended.
When is probing considered?
If the obstruction persists or causes repeated problems, the ophthalmologist may discuss probing of the tear duct. The timing depends on age, symptoms and examination findings.
