What is a retinal tear or detachment?
A retinal tear is a break in the retina. Retinal detachment occurs when the retina separates from the tissues that support it and can threaten permanent vision if untreated.
Warning symptoms
- Sudden new floaters.
- Flashes of light.
- A dark curtain or shadow.
- Sudden loss or distortion of vision.
Treatment
Some retinal tears can be treated with laser or cryotherapy. Retinal detachment often requires surgery such as vitrectomy, scleral buckle or another procedure selected according to the condition of the eye.
