Retinopathy of Prematurity

Why some premature infants need retinal screening, how retinopathy of prematurity is assessed and when treatment may be required.

Retinopathy of Prematurity

What is retinopathy of prematurity?

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is abnormal development of retinal blood vessels in some babies born prematurely, particularly those with lower birth weight or significant neonatal illness.

Why is screening important?

ROP can progress before parents notice symptoms. Scheduled retinal examinations help detect disease at a stage when observation or treatment can protect vision.

Treatment

Many mild cases improve as the retina matures. More active disease may require retinal laser, intravitreal medication or vitreoretinal surgery in advanced cases.
