A practical overview of childhood strabismus, amblyopia, diagnosis and treatment options, including surgery when appropriate.

Childhood Strabismus: Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment

What is childhood strabismus?

Strabismus is misalignment of the eyes. One eye may turn inward, outward, upward or downward, either constantly or intermittently.

Why is early assessment important?

Persistent misalignment can interfere with visual development and may lead to amblyopia, or lazy eye. Early diagnosis gives the best opportunity to protect vision.

How is it treated?

Treatment depends on the type and cause and may include glasses, treatment for amblyopia, prisms in selected cases or eye-muscle surgery when indicated. A complete pediatric eye examination is required to choose the appropriate plan.
