What is diabetic retinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the retinal blood vessels caused by diabetes. Early stages may not affect vision, which is why regular retinal examinations are important.
Possible complications
The condition can cause retinal leakage, macular edema, abnormal blood vessels, vitreous hemorrhage and advanced retinal traction.
Treatment and prevention
Treatment may include retinal laser, injections into the eye or vitreoretinal surgery in selected cases. Good control of blood glucose, blood pressure and other health factors is an important part of reducing progression.
