What is age-related macular degeneration?
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for detailed central vision.
Dry and wet AMD
The dry form usually progresses more slowly. The wet form develops when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the macula and leak fluid or blood, potentially causing more rapid visual loss.
Monitoring and treatment
Retinal examination and OCT are commonly used for follow-up. New distortion or sudden central visual change should be assessed promptly because active wet AMD may require treatment such as intravitreal injections.
